Federal Consumer Rights: The Law Is On Your Side.

About

About Federal Consumer Rights

Plain-language information about consumer-protection law, and a way to ask about your own situation.

What this site covers

Federal Consumer Rights is a national consumer-rights information site. It covers debt collection, credit reporting, background checks, unwanted calls and texts, data breaches and identity theft: what the federal consumer protection laws are about, what consumers run into, and what they can do next. Pages start from what happened to you, not from the name of a law.

Careful information. No promises about outcomes.

Whether a law applies, and what a consumer can do about it, depends on the facts and on the law where they live. This site is designed to help people understand the questions and find the relevant pages, not to give a personal legal conclusion or predict any outcome.

Legal Information & Attorney Advertising

Federal Consumer Rights is an independent legal information and marketing platform, not a law firm. We provide general information about consumer rights and legal matters. We do not provide legal advice or representation. Inquiries submitted through this website may be reviewed and shared with independent law firms for potential follow-up. No attorney-client relationship is established by contacting this website.

If you ask to be contacted, the information you provide may be transmitted to one or more attorneys, law firms, intake providers or related service providers that may evaluate the inquiry. Each attorney or law firm decides for itself whether to contact you or offer representation, and sending a request does not mean that anyone will. The Privacy Policy (sections 9 and 10) and the Terms of Use set this out in full.

Company pages

Some pages describe a company that consumers deal with, such as a debt collector or a credit reporting company: what it is, how consumers come into contact with it, and the rights that apply to that kind of dealing. Company and organization names are used for identification only and do not imply wrongdoing.

How the pages are written and checked

The Editorial Standards page explains how pages are drafted, which sources they rely on and what is checked before a page is published. No reviewing attorney is named on this site at present; when an attorney is engaged to review pages, the attorney will be named on the pages they review.
